Death is the Start Chapter 18
Three days have passed since Sarah and Melissa returned from Starpoint and since then Melissa hasn’t left the morgue. She didn’t eat she didn’t sleep she just wasted away staring at her brother’s body on that table hoping for any sign that he was alive. She didn’t care how impossible it was she wanted to believe that he’d wake up. As time passed she became weaker and weaker but no matter what she wouldn’t leave. Unfortunately, the fatigue and hunger became too much to bear and rather slowly she started to fall out of the chair. Her face was inches away from the ground but it never reached thanks to a hand clutching her by the shirt. “H-he’s not gon-n-na wa-ake up.” Elsewhere Sarah laid awake in her bed she couldn’t fall asleep no matter how hard she tried; her mind was restless with thoughts of everything that happened at Starpoint. Sarah looked at her clock and saw it was almost 2 in the morning. Sarah gave up and got out of bed hoping a walk might clear her head. She

Abomination: City of Ice Ch38: Renegades
Every city has that one area that represents everything that is wrong with society. It’s a place of darkness, greed, corruption, and death, a place where only the desperate or the despicable go, a place where someone without morals could sate any desire they wished. It was a place where the law was a distant memory, mercy unheard of, and where both gold and blood flowed freely and in equal amounts. In Iceport that place was known as the Ghost District, a region of dilapidated and mostly abandoned warehouses, crumbling docks, burned-out dwellings, cheap tenements, rowdy taverns, and sinister gambling dens. With evening rapidly approaching, Shelagh and Oktha moved as quickly as they could through the blighted streets of the Ghost District, following the hastily drawn map their teenage informant had provided them. Several of the buildings were naught but vacant shells, their roofs and interiors long collapsed, and even the occupied buildings looked to be near collapse from vandalism

Did You Miss Me? Part 2
I don’t remember much of the drive from the restaurant. My thoughts raced with anticipation. He’d never been this stern before. We’d discussed dominance and submission, but I’d only had snippets of exposure. How am I going to do this? I can’t be his submissive little whore. This isn’t who I am. I am always in control. Gregory shattered our silence as he commented, “Oh little slut, I’ve missed your feistiness. I’ve missed you.” We arrived at our destination- somewhere I was unfamiliar. Nervousness plagued my insides. He exited the driver’s side, instantly appearing to my right, and the door opened. “Come here and let me welcome you properly,” he beckoned, grabbing my wrist and pulling me to him. His hand snaked to the crown of my head, grasping a fistful of my short hair. He took my mouth with tenacity, a flood of emotion filling my chest and belly as he kissed me. I mewed softly as he continued with fervor, my nervousness dissolved as I sank deep into his arms. Just as I felt

Errek breathed in the still night air. Cool. Crisp. Infused with tangy sweat. That perfume never escaped the streets. Twining between buildings, it drew him to the city’s heart. Away from dark corners. Out of the side alleys. Straight into— Pulled back from lamplight. Stumbling, he caught his weight on the singular crutch he had begrudgingly brought with him. “You don’t need to go that far.” Turning to Torani, Errek leveled his tone. “It’s been slim pickings so far. I have to go somewhere.” “Don’t pretend you don’t know where you’re headed.” “When Kordi took me out, we went to the town center to scope out targets.” “The city is a different beast. Stick to the alleys.” “All right.” Errek shrugged. “I guess I’m not so hungry that I can’t skip a meal.” The crutch clacked forward three paces. Errek only heard that and his own footsteps. Torani had remained in place. Gotcha. “You coming?” Torani’s brow furrowed. He chewed his lip. His tense shoulders drooped.

Since they had already drawn attention to themselves, Torani nixed Errek’s suggestion to reach the warehouse through the fence gap. Instead, they moved on and doubled back, approaching the building from behind. The fence was unbroken there. Getting Errek through it would be difficult. Torani kindly offered to let Errek stay behind. Errek declined. He explained that watching Torani figure out an inside hunt would let them both learn at the same time. In truth, he did not trust Torani to fairly judge the risk. He wanted to see it for himself. Errek won that battle. Torani dug a hole under the fence and pulled Errek through. The warehouse’s back wall was solid brick broken by occasional windows. Like those in the front, the windows’ glass had been broken in and the frames boarded over. Torani cruised past them to the left side wall. No doors or windows. The right side was no better. The only entry point there was a crooked, roll-up garage door. A locked one. Torani sighed.

Unquenchable fire raced along a black pool, bringing heat without light. Hungry sand sucked the world into its coarse, abrasive maw. A disembodied heart beat no matter how many times it was crushed. Fragmented flashes from Torani’s fitful sleep. In as much as it could be called sleep. He fought to reclaim full consciousness. Delirious, he felt around his den. No. Not his den. Just a hole in the ground. A makeshift safe spot. Where was Ile-Ran…? No. Errek. Where was Errek? Torani was alone. Panicked, he sat up—bumped into clay. Wormed around. There was already a tunnel open to the surface. Scraping at the walls, he pulled himself forward. Grabbed a handful of grass from above. Both hands out. His torso out. Panting. Frantically scanning the horizon. “Torani? Are you okay?” Torani squirmed around to face Errek. Swallowed. Sheepishly pulled himself the rest of the way out. “Evening.” “Did you think I left you?” “Not by choice. Ilen might have the hunters after

Torani tripped over a stray raised root in the darkness. He caught himself, but only barely. Walking all night after a week of hiding in his cramped den was murder on his legs. What he would have given for working wings. It would have been so much easier to find the spot if he could fly. Panting, he leaned against a tree. A break. Just a short— “I’ve waited long enough, Torani.” “I know, Ilen. It’s just… just…” He pointed weakly ahead. More trees. Identical to the one he leaned on. Identical to the forest behind him. Her judgement filled the silence. He pushed away from his resting spot and trudged forward. A light beam panned through the scrub, momentarily blinding Torani. “That! See that! I told you!” Stumbling faster. Crunching leaves turned to hard asphalt underfoot. He skidded to a stop and back peddled off the road. That long, black expanse wended for miles in either direction. “This. Everything you need, we can get here.” Directly to his right. “Is this a

Errek and Kordi arrived at the nest near sunrise. She was annoyed the trip took so long, but nothing could be done about it. He needed to memorize the landmarks along their path. That took time. At least that was what he told her. In truth, his bad leg ached if he ran while carrying his victim. Slowing down to “look for landmarks” was the only way he could make the journey. Frustrated or not, at least Kordi seemed to be in better spirits. She joked and jeered as if the conversation about instinct and orders had never happened. Errek let her win the race to entrance tunnel. It allowed him a final look at the sky. At the outside world’s boundless glory. The infinite. How he loathed their suffocating, cramped nest. “Errek, what are you doing?” She peeked out of the tunnel. Did she feel the same way about returning home? He doubted it. “Nothing.” Dejectedly, he trailed in after her. Serana’s approving whistle welcomed them into the main chamber. “You each have one? I
